Mountain Lodge

A dialog between the cultures

THE OMNIA is the contemporary interpretation of the traditional mountain lodge. Here in the Swiss Alps, the mountain lodge, a quintessentially American concept, has been reinvented for its European environment by the New York based architect Ali Tayar (1959 – 2016). This dialogue between two cultures was the starting point for the design.

While the materials and the craftsmanship reflect the tradition of the Valais, the furnishings are inspired by a warm, handcrafted modernism. This era in 20th century design is revisited in THE OMNIA in the works of a group of European born, American designers whose European roots heavily influenced the American scene. They include Mies van der Rohe, Raymond Loewy, Vladimir Kagan and Eero Saarinen. Their works are complemented by USM Modular Furniture, which is recognised as a design classic in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York. But most of the interior furnishings and fittings are custom-made designs by Ali Tayar, conceived to meet the requirements of the mountain lodge and handcrafted by local cabinet makers.

This subtle interplay between design classics and custom-made products underscores the basic concept of the mountain lodge – THE OMNIA is the fusion of a multitude of different elements and influences to make a single harmonious whole.

Since its opening in June 2006, THE OMNIA has received international recognition in the form of awards and articles published in the press.

“Condé Nast Traveller USA” included THE OMNIA 2007 in its hotlist of the world’s best new hotels.
“Condé Nast Traveller UK” and the prestigious magazine “Wallpaper” praised the mountain lodge in multi-page articles.
“Travel and Leisure” selected THE OMNIA as one of the five greatest European chalets and lodges.
“Geo Saison” recognised the Mountain Lodge as the best design hotel in a competition of the 100 best European hotels.

The “Travellers’ Choice Award 2016” was awarded by TripAdvisor to THE OMINA as the “Best Swiss Hotel” based on millions of reviews; it came 6th out of the top European hotels.

THE OMNIA has received the “Prix Bienvenu” award from Switzerland Tourism and its presenting partner American Express several times for its exceptionally caring and helpful staff: in 2017 the it was voted one of the 10 friendliest hotels in Switzerland in the “Luxury hotel” class. In the following year it even received the gold medal as “the friendliest hotel in Switzerland”.

"Hotelcareer" has elected our very own THE OMNIA as best employer in Switzerland of 2019.

The "NZZ am Sonntag" voted THE OMNIA the "best small 5-star hotel" in Switzerland. The ranking only considered establishments with a maximum of 30 rooms.

The “Travellers’ Choice Awards 2020 – Best of the best” have been granted to THE OMNIA five times by TripAdvisor based on millions of reviews: As “best Swiss hotel”, “best Swiss luxury hotel” and “Swiss hotel with best service”; worldwide it is ranked second in the category “hotel with best service” and fifth in the category “best luxury hotel”.

At TripAdvisor's “Travellers' Choice Awards 2021 – Best of the Best”, THE OMNIA was once again convincing: 1st place in the categories “Best Swiss Hotel” and “Best European Hotel”; worldwide it is ranked second in the category “Best Hotel”.

In 2021, THE OMNIA received the “World Travel Award” as “Switzerland's Leading Boutique Hotel” for the fifth time in a row.
